Muad'Dib,

Do you believe that a servant in the Barony would even know that it existed in a living hell?

We have places in this existence that parallel the Barony. Please ponder their location(s).

I'd say the average NorK is a good example.

Linbar, agreed NorK must be a very unpleasant place. The parallels to the Barony are very strong. I don't think heart plugs exist even in that location, yet. But I never underestimate the level of perversion that some creatures are capable of.

My reading takes me in many directions and I have, regretfully, found the existence of a Barony type society throughout history. As a matter of fact I have an entire book dedicated to these type of creatures.

Perhaps we can turn this subject....toward a more pleasant one. I can't think of one however. Perhaps small furry woodland creatures?

That could get ugly, too.

I suppose you're right.

Almost lost a cat to a seriously (expletive deleted) red squirrel. (Red squirrel = aggravated nerve ending with four short legs and a fuzzy tail).

How about a widdel baby bunny?
Nah. Hawk food around here. (I'm up in the woods).

SmOrK.

The Harks are only going to dispose of certain classes of people at certain times- they have to enforce loyalty like any other dynasty, and will parallel the generic pattern of governance more than differ from it.

There will be rewards and punishments- there will be a merit advancement and hereditary titles- there will be values structured on family and industry and common sense. Men will still seek to court ladies, ladies will nag their mates, allowances will be made for even the young and old, and even the weak to show the capacity for top-down mercy- allowing hope for all in tough times to stick with the big cheese.

The fluidity of values will differ as much on caste and economics as well as culture for any civilization. Certain personality types and cognitive styles will be encouraged in one system over another- each culture will know a kind of persecution and enforcement of glass ceilings (in France for example- they persecute today on the basis of religion and culture- whereas in America, it's still ideological persection)

Overall, I think many commoners on Geidi Prime, and even civil servants, would of loved the baron.... it's in the Baron's best interest to be loved. A form of socialism would of existed, despite the existence of a class structure. Art would exist... hope for a better future would of existed... and when it doesn't work out, even the liberal institution of scapegoatism would of stood up to the plate and given way for a excuse for government to return and make things right. Once tyranny is established, and a few generations pass- everyone knows the norms of behavior and most are able to steer clear by sticking to the status quo of behavior.

The Paul and Duke Leto just played the morality game different- but Paul knew how to exploit this at the crucial moment wheneverything hit the fan- his system survived the apparent complete collapse of his dukedom. The baron could not use the innate advantages of his systems his strategem momentarily put him on untenable ground at the worst possible moment (his mentat was dead after all in all fairness)

Leto II was the best and understood this game perfectly, and made everyone learn the lesson of statecraft, will, and desire the hardest and surest way.
